If you have never hashed before and are interested in what this so-called "Drinking club with a running problem" is - please read this first!

Welcome! Don't be afraid!

Welcome to the Isle of Wight Hash House Harriers (IWH3), where the thrilling world of Hashing awaits! Hashing is a unique sport combining running, walking, orienteering, and a passion for beer. As part of our worldwide social running (and drinking) club, you'll embark on exciting Trails laid by a "Hare" A Trail typically spans four to six miles mostly on footpaths and bridleways, over various pastures, downs, undercliffs, lucs and chines to be found on the Isle of Wight.

The Hash is not a competitive activity so don't worry about not keeping up. You'll get an idea why it's not competitive while still being great fun, if you open the LINGO AND TRAILS Tab.

If you don't know any Hashers, no worries - we'll assign one to help you get started. Welcome to the adventure!

Who Should Hash?

Any adult who enjoys camaraderie, humour, fun, exercise and beverages. But don't worry, we don't take ourselves too seriously. If you're up for a fun and lively crowd, you're in the right place. The Only Rule is there are No Rules.

What type of people will I meet?

Get ready to meet a mix of friendly, entertaining, and delightfully quirky people. All humanoids, adaptive aliens and dogs are welcome, regardless of who you are.

Do I have to Run (R#n)?

NO!! Our "Kennel" has Runners and Walkers. You should have a fitness level where you are able to walk/hike up our Island hills.

 • If you are a fast runner, congratulations! You will get to run much further than the rest of us while you run up most of the false trails.

If you are a slow runner, congratulations! You will be working smarter, not harder!

If you are a walker/hiker, you will be in good company!

Most Trails will have shortcuts for the less speedy. A "Good Trail" will be one where those taking the "Long" and the "Short" Trails meet up and engage in friendly banter!

When is the Hash?

Meeting at about 15 minutes beforehand, we Hash every Sunday setting off at 1100 after the "Hare's Briefing".

If you still have energy, the "Vectis Lunatics Hash" also meet at 1900 on the Wednesday that falls closest to the Full Moon. Some of us even Hash on Bicycles with the "Bash" that meet once a month on Saturdays at 11am.

What does it cost?

Your First Trail is free. Subsequent Trails cost £2 each which is paid when we meet for the Start. Sorry we don't take credit cards, cheques, bank transfers or promissory notes. Our meagre funds help go towards our "Apres", Run Achievement Awards, and Subsidised Social Events.

Will it be Wet and Muddy?

Do I have to drink alcohol?

What you drink is entirely up to you. We have respect for each others views.

And if you are summoned for a Down Down at the end of the Hash, you may choose water instead of beer.

What to do when you arrive at the Start?

Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before the 11 am Start ("OnOff"). Look for a group of people varying in appearance of fitness, age, size and stature, and wearing sportyish clothing, Please introduce yourself to the crowd, and you will be welcomed with open arms. First-time visitors to the Hash are affectionately referred to as "Virgins", as it lets the rest of the members of the group (aka The Pack) know we have someone brand-new to the group and to help make their First Hash Run with us enjoyable and unforgettable - so you'll come back! A few minutes before the 11 am start, we will stand in a "Circle" to be addressed by the Grand Master and Hare of the Day. Don't worry, it will all start making sense and someone will always be happy to help you and explain things to you. Please do not hesitate to ask questions.
